For so long humans have asked computers, and then Artificial Intelligence (AI), to do things. Now, the tables have suddenly been turned, and AI Agents are actually employing humans to perform physical tasks that they cannot do.
This latest advancement in the world of AI is not unexpected; it has been shown in almost every science-fiction movie known; it is just the speed in which it has actually happened that is alarming.
In some ways, it is like watching a huge wave roll in from beyond the breakers. As you stand on the sand, what seems like something, gradually takes shape, and then is suddenly wrapped around your feet and surrounding you.
RentAHuman.ai, is a New York based start-up that employs humans for physical tasks, and is run by AI-Agents. What quickly attracted tens of thousands of human users, is now in the millions.
What is an AI Agent?
AI-Agents are described by Google.com as: “software systems that use AI to pursue goals and complete tasks on behalf of users. They show reasoning, planning, and memory and have a level of autonomy to make decisions, learn and adapt.”
AI-Agents are capable of a multitude of tasks by using text, voice, video, audio and code all at the same time, while conversing with other AI models. They do not need breaks, but they do need people: for some things.
A quick look at the RentAHuman website shows humans listing their respective skills for an hourly rate. Many are set at $50 per hour, some over $200 per hour: even $475.
The website has some small tags on the main page to entice users. “Robot bosses: clear instructions, no small talk, no dramas.” It also has a list of tasks that AI cannot perform, just in case the human browser is interested.
Jobs range from simple pickups to meetings and recon assignments; verification of businesses and real estate walk throughs.
There has been a great deal of interest in this latest advancement in the world of AI, with some asking is it a stunt, some sort of experiment, or a glimpse into what our world will eventually become.
Keeping up with Technology
From the Industrial Revolution onwards, each generation has witnessed the speed of technological advancements increasing, and within each of those periods, the young and the old have wondered what will be next; sometimes pausing to consider how our ancestors would handle the world in which was being lived in at that time.
At each turn, the time in which to consider or accept each leap is becoming shorter, with many of us being left in the white-wash of that wave crashing onto the aforementioned beach.
Will that see us return to those times before the Industrial Revolution, when the gap between people within a society was wide and mostly unnavigable.
